The Village of Newark has been awarded two grants aimed at enhancing visitor experiences along the Erie Canal and celebrating its historic bicentennial.
The first grant, provided by the New York State Canal Corporation and the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, will fund infrastructure improvements. These enhancements include a new kiosk, wayfinding signage, landscaping, bike racks, a mounted air pump, park benches, and a drinking fountain.
The second grant will support the arrival of the replica canal boat “Seneca Chief,” which is scheduled to stop at the Port of Newark on September 30. The visit is part of a commemorative voyage from Buffalo to Albany marking 200 years of the Erie Canal.
“The Canalway wouldn’t be what it is without the communities and organizations along its 500-plus miles,” said Brian U. Stratton, director of the NYS Canal Corporation. “This program offers us an opportunity to give back by supporting public events and infrastructure improvements.”
Mayor Jonathan Taylor expressed gratitude for the grants, emphasizing the importance of the canal as a central gathering place for both residents and visitors.
