Attorney General warns against price gouging of eggs, poultry

  • Staff Report

Amid a national bird flu outbreak causing shortages and price increases, New York Attorney General Letitia James has issued a warning to businesses against price gouging on eggs and poultry.

The state’s price gouging law prohibits selling essential goods at excessively high prices during emergencies.

Here in the Finger Lakes bird flu was confirmed in some snow geese around Seneca Lake.

James urged consumers to report significant price hikes to her office, which is actively monitoring the situation. In 2021, her office reached a settlement with Hillandale Farms for overcharging on eggs during the pandemic, leading to the distribution of 1.2 million eggs to New Yorkers.

Violators can face fines up to $25,000 per incident. Consumers can report concerns via an online complaint form or hotline.
