Avian Influenza has been confirmed in snow geese found dead along the shores of Seneca Lake, raising concerns for both wildlife and the local community. The Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association reported the first cases of dead snow geese at Lakeshore Landing (Romulus) earlier this month, and since then, additional reports have surfaced from areas like Cottonwood Cove and Kashong Point.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation collected carcasses on January 10, which were sent to Cornell University for testing. Results, confirmed on January 13, indicated the presence of Avian Flu in these geese. While the disease is often found in waterfowl populations at low levels, the current outbreak is part of a national rise in Avian Fluu cases.
Residents in the area are urged to stay cautious when encountering dead birds, as the virus spreads through mucus and feces. It is recommended to avoid contact with the birds, keep pets and children away, and follow proper disposal instructions. If you must handle a carcass, wear gloves, eye protection, and wash all surfaces and clothing that may have come into contact with the birds.
So far, snow geese appear to be the primary species affected, though Avian Flu can impact other birds as well. The Seneca Lake Pure Waters Association is working closely with DEC officials to address the large number of dead birds, especially in private property areas where snow geese are found.
If you spot multiple dead birds or have concerns about the outbreak, the DEC asks that you report them via the NYSDEC Avian Influenza Reporting Form or by calling the regional wildlife hotline at 585-226-5380 during normal business hours.
