Fifty dead snow geese discovered at Kashong Point on Seneca Lake are being tested for bird flu, according to Ontario and Yates County health officials. The incident follows recent detections of the virus in Seneca County.
Although the CDC states that the risk to humans is low, officials urge the public to avoid contact with groups of dead birds. Surveillance efforts, including an online reporting platform, are in place to track potential outbreaks.
“There is no cause for immediate alarm,” said Ontario County Public Health Director Kate Ott, emphasizing the importance of monitoring.
