Americans divided on benefits of World Health Organization

A Pew Research survey reveals that opinions on U.S. membership in the World Health Organization are split. As of April 2024, 58% of Americans believe the U.S. benefits from its membership, though this is down from earlier in the pandemic.

Partisan divides are significant: around 80% of Democrats see benefits in WHO membership compared to just 38% of Republicans. This 41-point gap has narrowed since 2021. Additionally, liberal Democrats are 55 points more likely than conservative Republicans to view WHO membership positively.

During the pandemic, most Americans approved of the WHO’s performance, rating it higher than the U.S. or China in managing the crisis.
