Trump orders development of next-gen U.S. missile defense system

President Donald Trump signed an executive order to create a next-generation missile defense shield aimed at countering threats from ballistic, hypersonic, and advanced cruise missiles. The plan prioritizes protecting U.S. citizens and critical infrastructure.

The Department of Defense has 60 days to submit a strategy, including space-based interceptors, early detection systems, and counterstrike capabilities. The order also calls for reviewing allied missile defense cooperation and expanding defenses for U.S. troops abroad.

A funding plan will be developed alongside the Fiscal Year 2026 budget. The initiative marks a significant shift toward strengthening homeland defense against emerging missile threats.
