Key decisions ahead for Seneca Meadows landfill expansion

The future of New York’s largest landfill, Seneca Meadows, will be determined in the coming months through state, local, and court decisions. The landfill’s owner, Waste Connections, seeks approval for an expansion that would extend operations until at least 2040, but opposition remains strong.

The first step comes Jan. 31, when the state DEC will complete its review of the project’s environmental impact. If approved, a public comment period will follow.

On March 4, the Seneca Falls town board could vote on whether to issue a local permit and new host agreement. However, that vote has already been delayed multiple times.

Meanwhile, a legal battle over a 2016 town law requiring the landfill to close by 2025 is headed to the state’s highest court.
