Geneva police arrest sex offender for failing to register new address

Geneva police arrested a convicted sex offender on Tuesday for failing to register his address with law enforcement, authorities confirmed in a press release.

Joseph W. Shantz, 39, was taken into custody around 6:30 p.m. by officers from the department’s Uniformed Division. Shantz, who had been living on Rose Street in Geneva, reportedly abandoned that residence in August 2024 without informing police or the New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services, as required by law.

At the time of his arrest, Shantz was already in custody at the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office for an unrelated charge. He has been charged with failing to register or verify his address, a violation of New York’s Corrections Law 168-T, classified as a Class E felony. He was processed and held for arraignment in Centralized Arraignment Court.

The Geneva Police Department is urging anyone with information about Shantz’s movements or other related incidents to contact Detective Lieutenant John Van Savage at 315.828.6779. Calls and tips can remain anonymous.
