Ontario County warns residents of phone scam targeting jury duty no-shows

The Ontario County Sheriff’s Office is warning residents about a phone scam in which callers impersonate deputies or sergeants and claim that recipients owe fines for missed court appearances or jury duty.

In a press release issued Friday, Sheriff David Cirencione said the scammers are demanding payment via Apple Pay or PayPal. The office emphasized that neither the Sheriff’s Office nor the Ontario County Court will ever request payment over the phone or use such tactics.

Residents who receive such calls are urged not to provide personal information or make payments. Instead, they should hang up and contact the Sheriff’s Office directly at 585-394-4560 for verification or to report the incident.

The Sheriff’s Office encourages the public to share this warning with friends and family to prevent others from falling victim to the scam.
