Two arrested after traffic stop, threats against troopers in Steuben County

State police arrested two Addison residents following a traffic stop on Interstate 86 in the town of Campbell. The incident led to multiple charges, including a felony count of making a terroristic threat.

Mary M. Stevens, 38, was charged with obstructing governmental administration and resisting arrest, both misdemeanors, as well as unspecified traffic infractions. Authorities said Stevens was uncooperative during the stop and resisted when officers asked her to exit the vehicle. She was processed at the Painted Post barracks and issued an appearance ticket for February 10 in Campbell Town Court.

Shawn H. Peterson, 32, also of Addison, faces a more serious charge of making a terroristic threat, a Class D felony. According to police, Peterson called Steuben County 911 during the traffic stop and made threats against the responding troopers. He was taken into custody and transported to the Steuben County Jail for arraignment.

The New York State Police noted that the investigation remains active and have not disclosed additional details about the threats or the circumstances surrounding the traffic stop.

The felony charge against Peterson highlights the seriousness of threats made against law enforcement, which can result in significant legal penalties if convicted. Stevens’s misdemeanor charges, including resisting arrest, further underscore the challenges law enforcement faced during the incident.
