U.S. intelligence agencies divided on ‘Havana syndrome’ cause

A new intelligence assessment reveals a split among U.S. spy agencies over the cause of “Havana syndrome,” a mysterious illness affecting American diplomats and intelligence officers.

Two of seven agencies suggest a foreign actor may have used a novel weapon, though with low confidence, while five agencies deem foreign involvement “very unlikely,” citing intelligence that adversaries were unaware or denied involvement.

The report follows criticism from victims and lawmakers who believe foreign involvement is being overlooked. Investigations continue into potential causes, including radio frequencies. While opinions differ, officials emphasize the legitimacy of victims’ injuries and the need for government support and compensation.

The debate remains unresolved.
