A Painted Post woman is facing felony charges after allegedly defrauding the Steuben County Department of Social Services of more than $4,400 in benefits she was not eligible to receive.
Alice M. Matthews, 63, of East High Street, was arrested on January 3 by Steuben County Sheriff’s Office investigators. Authorities allege that between August 25, 2023, and November 30, 2024, Matthews knowingly submitted a false instrument for filing with the Department of Social Services.
Matthews has been charged with Offering a False Instrument for Filing in the First Degree, a class E felony, and Grand Larceny in the Third Degree, a class D felony. Following her arraignment in Centralized Arraignment Court, she was released.
The investigation was conducted with assistance from the Steuben County Department of Social Services Fraud and Legal Affairs Unit and the District Attorney’s Office.
Sheriff Jim Allard emphasized the collaborative effort in addressing fraud cases, underscoring the importance of safeguarding public resources.
The case remains ongoing, and no further details have been released at this time.
