Seneca County Sheriff’s Office hosts scam prevention class for seniors

The Seneca County Sheriff’s Office took proactive steps to protect local seniors from fraud and manipulation by hosting a Scam and Manipulation Class on December 17 at the Seneca County Office for the Aging. Led by Investigator James Palmer, the session provided valuable insights to help seniors recognize and avoid common scams.

The class aimed to arm seniors with the knowledge needed to identify fraudulent schemes, which often target older adults. Attendees learned about various types of scams, including phone calls, emails, and other deceptive tactics designed to steal personal information or money.

Sheriff Timothy Thompson praised the initiative, noting that educating the community on scam prevention is a priority for his office. “One of our campaign goals was to provide these types of classes regularly in hopes of keeping our citizens from becoming victims of scammers,” Sheriff Thompson said. “We will continue to provide these classes in the future and plan to rotate locations to accommodate our entire community.”

The event highlighted the importance of vigilance and awareness, especially among seniors who are often targeted due to perceived vulnerability. The session also included practical advice on how to respond when encountering potential scams and where to report suspicious activity.

Sheriff Thompson extended his gratitude to Investigator Palmer and Director Faiola of the Seneca County Office for the Aging for their efforts in organizing the class. The Sheriff’s Office plans to offer similar programs across different locations in Seneca County to reach more residents.
