NWS: Lake Effect Tapers Today, Areawide Snow Expected Late-Wednesday into Thursday

The Finger Lakes region will get a break from the season’s first lake effect snow event, and so will Western and Northern New York, but residents are warned to brace for a new round of wintry weather. The National Weather Service (NWS) confirmed that the lake effect snow, which has coated parts of Wayne, Cayuga, and Onondaga counties, will diminish by this afternoon.

Lake effect bands brought an additional 1 to 3 inches of snow to areas such as Newark and Fair Haven, with similar amounts reported in Syracuse and Hamilton. Although snowfall is tapering off, road conditions remain hazardous, particularly for morning commuters.

A shift in weather patterns is on the horizon. Meteorologists are forecasting a low-pressure system passing just north of the region between Wednesday night and Thursday. This system is expected to bring widespread snow and gusty winds, further complicating travel conditions.

The heaviest accumulations are likely east of Lake Erie and Lake Ontario, where lake-enhanced snow could push totals to several inches in some locations. Blowing and drifting snow is anticipated due to wind gusts reaching 40 mph or higher in certain areas.

In the longer term, temperatures will drop significantly, ushering in the coldest air of the season by the weekend. Snow showers are expected to persist through Friday night, especially in areas prone to lake effect activity. The weather will gradually stabilize as high pressure builds over the region, bringing drier conditions by Sunday.

Residents are urged to prepare for rapidly changing conditions over the next few days and to monitor updates from local authorities.
