Federal grants bolster counterterrorism and emergency prep across Finger Lakes

Counties across New York State will share nearly $220 million in federal funding to enhance counterterrorism and emergency preparedness efforts. Supported by FEMA, the grants aim to strengthen communities’ ability to prevent, respond to, and recover from disasters and emergencies.

The funding, distributed through programs like the State Homeland Security Program and Operation Stonegarden, includes allocations for local counties. Here’s how the funding breaks down by county in the Finger Lakes: Cayuga will receive $132,303; Ontario will receive $170,714; Schuyler will receive $46,946; Seneca will receive $51,215; Steuben will get $110,965; Tompkins will get $98,160; Wayne will see $145,106; and Yates will receive $34,143.

Governor Kathy Hochul emphasized the partnership between federal, state, and local governments, highlighting the importance of safety for New Yorkers. Senate Majority Leader Charles Schumer praised the investment, noting its role in addressing diverse threats, including cybersecurity and hate-driven violence.
