Winter storm brings heavy snow and hazardous travel to parts of CNY and Southern Tier

A winter storm is sweeping across Central New York, the Southern Tier, and the Finger Lakes today, bringing heavy snow, gusty winds, and challenging travel conditions. A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect until 4 p.m., with significant snowfall expected in higher elevations and hazardous conditions persisting throughout the day.

Snowfall totals will vary widely depending on elevation. In the valleys, accumulations of 1 to 4 inches are forecast, while areas above 1,500 feet can expect between 6 and 12 inches. The highest elevations may see totals reach 12 to 16 inches, particularly in parts of the Catskills and northeast Pennsylvania. Snowfall rates of 1 to 2 inches per hour are likely during the morning, potentially disrupting commutes.

The National Weather Service reports that the heaviest snow bands are concentrated east of Interstate 81 but are spreading westward. In cities like Ithaca, Elmira, and Binghamton, snow accumulation will depend on elevation, with valley areas experiencing slower changeovers from rain to snow. High elevations in the Southern Tier and Finger Lakes, including areas near Vestal, have already reported accumulations exceeding 5 inches overnight.

Strong winds, gusting up to 35 mph in some locations, may exacerbate conditions by creating blowing snow, downing tree limbs, and causing sporadic power outages. Drivers are urged to use caution, particularly on untreated roads, as visibility could be limited during heavier snow squalls.

Temperatures will remain in the 30s today, with little variation due to heavy cloud cover and precipitation. Overnight lows are expected to hover around 30 degrees, further solidifying snowpack in many areas.

This weekend, scattered lake-effect snow showers may develop as winds shift northwestward, particularly off Lake Ontario. However, accumulations are expected to be light. A ridge building into the region by Sunday afternoon will bring drier conditions, with temperatures topping out in the upper 30s to low 40s.

Residents are reminded to prepare for potential power outages and keep emergency supplies, such as flashlights, food, and water, in their vehicles if travel is unavoidable.
