Oil giant Phillips 66 faces federal charges for allegedly violating the Clean Water Act by discharging industrial wastewater with excessive oil and grease from its Carson refinery into Los Angeles County’s sewer system in 2020 and 2021. Prosecutors accuse the Texas-based company of failing to report the violations.
Phillips 66 is charged with two counts of negligent violations and four counts of knowing violations of the Clean Water Act, facing up to $2.4 million in fines and five years of probation per count. In response, the company pledged cooperation with authorities while maintaining its commitment to safety.
This comes as Phillips plans to close the refinery by the end of 2025, reducing California’s refining capacity by 8%.
