New York unveils 2023-2024 student performance report card

The New York State Education Department (NYSED) has released its 2023-2024 student performance report, covering statewide tests including the Regents, NYSAA, and exams in English, math, and science for grades 3-8. The data highlights mixed results and declining proficiency in key subjects across public schools statewide.

Among the findings: 46% of students in grades 3-8 reached proficiency in English, while 52% met proficiency in math. Science scores showed only 35% proficiency among fifth and eighth graders. Regents Exams had higher success rates, with 79% proficient in English and 74% in Physics. The report also tracked alternative assessments for students with cognitive disabilities, with an average proficiency of 78%.

Despite pockets of strong performance, the report underscores challenges in key areas, prompting calls for targeted interventions to address gaps in student achievement.
