Winter Storm Watch for Central New York brings threat of heavy snow and power outages

The National Weather Service (NWS) in Binghamton has issued a Winter Storm Watch for parts of central New York, warning of potentially heavy, wet snow starting Thursday afternoon and lasting through Friday afternoon. Higher elevations could see accumulations of up to 8 inches, while lower elevations may receive up to 4 inches.

The advisory, in effect from November 20 to November 22 at 4 p.m., highlights significant impacts, including the risk of sporadic power outages due to the weight of the snow on tree limbs and strong winds. Hazardous road conditions are expected to disrupt Thursday evening and Friday morning commutes.

Residents are urged to monitor updates to the forecast and reconsider travel plans. Those who must travel are advised to drive cautiously and carry a winter storm kit with essentials like tire chains, booster cables, flashlights, blankets, extra clothing, and water.

The storm is linked to a strong low-pressure system expected to bring widespread rain on Thursday before transitioning to snow in higher elevations overnight. Cooler air will extend across the region, and bands of heavy snowfall are possible in localized areas Thursday night.

This marks the first major snowstorm of the season for many parts of the Wyoming Valley and Catskills, according to the NWS. Officials stress the importance of preparation, particularly given the potential for power outages and treacherous roads.
