Cornell University confirmed that the body recovered Sunday from Fall Creek gorge near the Stewart Avenue bridge was that of Winter Knutson, a sophomore math and physics student from Ithaca.
Vice President for Student and Campus Life Ryan Lombardi informed students Monday, calling it “a very difficult time for our campus community.” Knutson, a graduate of Ithaca High School, was known for their academic passion and contributions to school math and brain teams.
The recovery occurred hours after an unrelated rescue of another student in a separate part of the gorge.
Support services are available, including walk-ins with Student Support & Advocacy at Willard Straight Hall, Counseling & Psychological Services drop-ins, and the SHARE Office for confidential assistance. A community support meeting is scheduled for Tuesday, November 12, in Goldwin Smith Hall.
