Authorities responded to an incident at the Finger Lakes Mall polling site on Monday after an unauthorized individual reportedly accessed the location. Officials with the Cayuga County Board of Elections reported that law enforcement agencies, including the New York State Police and the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Department, were called to the site in the early afternoon to investigate.
After reviewing security footage, conducting a walkthrough, and interviewing Board of Elections personnel, law enforcement concluded that no criminal act had occurred. According to the Board of Elections, no ballots or voting records were present at the time, as early voting had concluded and the site was merely being prepped for Election Day.
Commissioners John Camardo, representing the Republican Party, and Keith Batman, representing the Democratic Party, reassured the public that election integrity remains intact. They emphasized that all voting machines were secure, locked in a separate room, and individually sealed. Security measures remained uncompromised, with no evidence that the locked room or voting machine seals were tampered with.
“While an unfortunate incident, it will have no impact on our election, and we look forward to tomorrow, Election Day,” the commissioners stated.
The incident at the Finger Lakes Mall has drawn attention in Cayuga County, but officials are urging voters to feel confident in the security measures in place.
