Bath’s Alstom Factory lands $16M for hybrid train development

Alstom’s facility in Bath is set to become a hub for innovative rail technology thanks to nearly $16 million in federal funding. The investment will support the Hybrid Locomotive Project, which aims to develop new battery technology for two hybrid battery-diesel trains.

Senator Chuck Schumer announced the funding, highlighting its potential to bolster the Southern Tier’s role in battery manufacturing and clean energy innovation. “This investment ensures the next generation of rail technology is stamped ‘Made in Upstate NY’,” Schumer said.

The project is a collaboration between Alstom, Norfolk Southern Railway, and Binghamton University’s New Energy New York Consortium. Funded through the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Consolidated Rail Infrastructure and Safety Improvements program, the initiative seeks to modernize older locomotives, making them more efficient and environmentally friendly.
