The historic Sentry Bridge at Watkins Glen State Park, an iconic structure welcoming millions of visitors over the last century, is set to be replaced as part of a new project announced by the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation (OPRHP). Plans for the new bridge, which aims to address structural issues and preserve the park’s scenic integrity, call for construction to begin in July 2025, with the new span expected to open by July 2026.
The current bridge, built in 1908, has deteriorated due to age and weather, prompting OPRHP to replace it with a more sustainable design. A recent study found that the aging structure, made of concrete and stone veneer, sits atop unstable rock conditions. The new bridge will rely on more secure rock formations on the gorge’s north side, ensuring long-term stability.
The replacement, designed by the New York City studios of schlaich bergermann partner (sbp) and Snøhetta, will feature a contemporary half-arch made from stainless steel, reinterpreting the original structure’s historic design while incorporating modern materials. The $7.5 million project, funded through New York’s NY Works program, will see the bridge constructed off-site and installed in one piece, a process intended to reduce disruption within the park.
Local officials have highlighted the importance of the bridge to the park’s character and the surrounding region. Watkins Glen Mayor Laurie DeNardo described the replacement as a “long-awaited” improvement that will serve the community and visitors for years to come. Assemblyman Philip Palmesano also noted that the Sentry Bridge is often the first step in visitors’ exploration of the park’s scenic Gorge Trail.
The Sentry Bridge is a key access point to Watkins Glen State Park, the most visited park in the Finger Lakes region, which draws more than 1.2 million visitors annually. The park’s Gorge Trail, which passes under 15 waterfalls, will remain open throughout the construction, with alternative access via the North Rim Trail. Shuttle services and other amenities, including the park’s pool and gift shop, will continue to be available during the project.
With Watkins Glen serving as both a major tourist attraction and a foundation of the local economy, the bridge replacement is part of ongoing efforts to maintain the park’s infrastructure and enhance visitor experience.
