Volunteers needed for Onondaga Lake habitat restoration event

Community members are invited to help enhance the ecosystem at Onondaga Lake by participating in a Habitat Enhancement Event on Saturday, Nov. 9, from 12 to 2 p.m. The event, organized by the Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps, will focus on clearing debris from the lake’s shoreline and monitoring bird nest boxes. Participants will also learn about local wildlife and the importance of maintaining healthy habitats from experts with the National Audubon Society, Onondaga Audubon, and Parsons.

Volunteers are asked to wear appropriate outdoor clothing, including shoes or boots, long pants, and sleeves, and to bring their own work gloves. Plastic bags will be provided. The event, which will take place rain or shine, is free and open to the public, but space is limited.

Volunteers will meet at Honeywell’s Onondaga Lake Visitors Center, located at 280 Restoration Way in Syracuse. Registration is required and can be completed online. For more information or to register, visit the Audubon website or call 315-365-3588.

“Onondaga Lake is a crucial habitat for birds,” said Chris Lajewski, director of the Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps. “In the winter, the lake attracts Bald Eagles, waterfowl, and songbirds seeking food and shelter. This event provides an opportunity for residents to help preserve and enhance the lake’s 90 acres of restored habitat.”

The Onondaga Lake Conservation Corps, founded by Honeywell in 2012, has grown into a community-driven initiative aimed at restoring and improving wildlife habitats in the area. It is now a program under the National Audubon Society, with support from organizations like Parsons, National Grid, and SUNY Environmental Science and Forestry.
