Cuba’s power crisis worsens as millions remain without electricity

Millions in Cuba faced another morning without power on Sunday following a third partial grid failure in two days, intensifying a crisis that has left residents struggling with blackouts and shortages. The latest collapse affected the western provinces, including Havana, where the entire capital was plunged into darkness overnight.

Efforts to restore power are underway, but progress is slow and complicated by the approach of Hurricane Oscar, which threatens the eastern part of the island with high winds. Cuba’s largest power plant, Antonio Guiteras, is back online and expected to help restore some service.

Frustration is mounting among residents, leading to small protests in Havana. The government blames the blackouts on infrastructure issues, fuel shortages, and sanctions, but with no immediate solution in sight, tensions continue to rise.
