DEC continues sea lamprey control treatments at Catharine Creek and Dresden Delta

The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) will continue its lampricide treatments to control parasitic sea lampreys at Catharine Creek Canal and the Dresden Delta. The treatments, set for Wednesday and Thursday, are weather-dependent and will target areas not treated earlier this year.

Sea lampreys, which prey on fish like lake trout and Atlantic salmon, threaten fish populations in Seneca Lake. DEC will apply Bayluscide, a selective pesticide, to kill lamprey larvae while minimizing harm to other aquatic species.

Precautions include avoiding lake water use in treated areas for up to four days. Residents can request drinking water from DEC if affected.
