The U.S. will send troops and a Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) anti-missile system to Israel in response to recent missile attacks from Iran, the Pentagon announced Sunday. The move is a rare deployment aimed at bolstering Israel’s air defenses as it considers retaliation. Iran fired over 180 missiles at Israel on Oct. 1.
Pentagon officials framed the deployment as part of a broader U.S. military adjustment in the region. Though U.S. forces have supported Israel from afar, this marks a significant step, with around 100 troops required to operate the THAAD system.
Iran criticized the decision, warning that U.S. personnel are at risk.
