A towering plume of black smoke swept over Auburn on Saturday evening, alarming residents as a tire fire blazed behind Nucor Steel. The thick smoke was visible across the city, drawing attention shortly after 6:15 p.m.
According to officials, the smoke originated from a pile of burning tires located behind the steel plant. Firefighters managed to halt the smoke by 6:45 p.m., but the haze lingered over the city until nightfall.
No injuries were reported, and authorities have yet to disclose additional information about the incident.
