The New York State Canal Corporation, in partnership with the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, is now accepting applications for the 2025 Canal System Tourism Infrastructure and Event Grants. The program aims to support tourism, recreation, and events along the state’s canal system, including the waterways and Canalway Trail. Applications are due by November 15, 2024.
As New York prepares to celebrate the bicentennial of the Erie Canal in 2025, the grant program will prioritize projects that enhance tourism infrastructure and commemorate the canal’s 200th anniversary. The program also seeks to expand participation in events along the historic waterway.
Counties, municipalities, local government units, nonprofit organizations, and federally recognized Native American tribes located within the Canalway Corridor are eligible to apply. For infrastructure projects located on New York State Canal Corporation land, only governmental entities or nonprofits with an existing Use and Occupancy Permit are eligible.
“The Tourism Infrastructure and Events Program is a fantastic opportunity for communities to participate in the commemoration of the Erie Canal’s 200th birthday,” said Brian U. Stratton, director of the New York State Canal Corporation. “We’re excited to work with local stakeholders and municipalities to bring their ideas to life.”
Grant funding is available in two categories: Event Support, offering awards between $500 and $3,000, and Tourism Infrastructure & Amenity Support, offering awards between $5,000 and $24,000. Applicants may submit proposals for one or both categories.
A virtual information session is scheduled for Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at 10 a.m. for interested applicants.
“The Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor looks forward to supporting investments that prepare the corridor for its next century of service while also commemorating this milestone,” said Bob Radliff, executive director of the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor.
In 2024, 43 organizations received over $196,000 through this program, funding a variety of projects including eight infrastructure improvements and 36 events.
