Man injured after cabin fire in Yates County

A fire at a cabin in the Town of Italy left a man injured on Thursday when he fell from a ladder while trying to extinguish the flames, according to the Yates County Sheriff’s Office.

Deputies and several local fire departments were dispatched to the scene on Four Wheel Drive just after noon, where a wood stove fire had spread to the cabin’s roof, authorities said. The blaze reportedly began in the stove pipe before catching the roof on fire.

The cabin’s sole occupant, identified as Tim Gross, 49, of Hamlin, attempted to put out the fire but slipped from a ladder, injuring his ankle and hand in the fall. He was taken to Thompson Hospital for treatment, deputies said.

Firefighters from Naples, Potter, Middlesex, Branchport, Rushville, and Penn Yan, along with Middlesex Ambulance and the Fire Investigation Team, were called to assist in containing the fire. It was successfully extinguished, and no further injuries were reported.

An investigation into the cause of the fire is ongoing.
