Family escapes safely after electrical fire at Jerusalem home

A family of four safely escaped a structure fire Saturday afternoon in the Town of Jerusalem after a homeowner managed to contain the flames before emergency crews arrived, according to the Yates County Sheriff’s Office.

First responders were dispatched around 4:54 p.m. to a home on Benton Jerusalem Townline Road for a reported structure fire.

Investigators said the fire originated in an electrical panel box inside the residence. Before firefighters arrived, the homeowner was able to keep the fire contained to the panel box area, preventing it from spreading through the home.

Authorities identified the residents as Luke W. McNeil, 29, Lauren T. McNeil, 29, and two juveniles.

All four occupants were able to safely evacuate the residence and no injuries were reported.

Penn Yan Fire Department, Penn Yan Ambulance, and Yates County Office of Emergency Management also responded to the scene.
