Canandaigua City Council to honor longtime firefighter, discuss historic designation and public safety updates

Canandaigua City Council will meet on Thursday at 7 p.m. in the Hurley Building to address several important items, including the recognition of a retiring firefighter, the removal of a historic designation, and updates to local public safety regulations.

Firefighter honored for nearly four decades of service

One of the highlights of the evening will be a resolution honoring Firefighter Ronald Bement for his 39 years of dedicated service to the city. Bement, who began as a volunteer firefighter in 1985 and later became a full-time member of the Canandaigua Fire Department, retired on September 27, 2024. The City Council will acknowledge his outstanding contributions, including life-saving awards and his role as a fire safety educator.

Public hearing on removing historic designation

The council will also hold a public hearing regarding the removal of the historic designation for 355 North Main Street. According to the city’s review, the property no longer meets the criteria for such a designation due to the loss of significant architectural features.

Public safety regulations and other key resolutions

Several public safety updates are also on the agenda. The council will consider a resolution awarding a contract for replacing aging boards on the City Pier Boathouse decks, with work to be carried out by Knapp & Schlappi Lumber Co. at a cost of $27,600. Additionally, the council will set a public hearing to discuss changes to parking regulations at Kershaw Park and Lakefront Park, including prohibiting overnight parking except at electric vehicle charging stations.

Other agenda items include the approval of a Peace Pole installation at Central on Main, a public art donation from the Canandaigua Rotary, and the adoption of Ontario County’s updated Hazard Mitigation Action Plan.

Residents can attend the meeting in person at 205 Saltonstall Street or virtually via Zoom. The session will also be livestreamed on Finger Lakes TV.
