Just 24 hours after splitting a doubleheader in Atlanta to clinch a postseason berth, the New York Mets traveled back to Milwaukee for Game 1 of the National League Wild Card Series and rallied for an 8-4 victory over the Brewers.
New York was trailing 4-3 entering the fifth inning but things quickly changed. With two men on base and two outs in the fifth, Jose Iglesias hit a sharp ground ball to first base, where Rhys Hoskins smothered it and flipped it to pitcher Joel Payamps, but Iglesias slid in head first to beat him to the bag as Tyrone Taylor crossed the plate to tie the game.Â
Iglesias’ hustle sparked a five-run fifth for New York and the bullpen held onto the lead, giving the Mets their first road win in the postseason since Game 4 of the 2015 NLCS.
Jesse Winker had a game-tying two-run triple in the second. J.D. Martinez came off the bench and delivered a two-run single, Mark Vientos added an RBI single, while Starling Marte chipped in a go-ahead sacrifice fly.Â
Luis Severino allowed four runs (three earned) on eight hits in six innings.
The Mets look to sweep the Brewers and advance to the NLDS on Wednesday at 7:38 p.m. Sean Manaea will get the start.
