The New York Yankees (94-68) didn’t have anything to play for in the regular season finale but still came away with a 6-4 victory over the Pittsburgh Pirates (76-86) on Sunday evening in the Bronx after a one-hour and 31-minute rain delay.
Alex Verdugo was the hero in this one, lining a go-ahead two-out, two-run single in the eighth inning before Clay Holmes nailed down his 30th save.
Trent Grisham had two hits and drove in three runs, including his ninth home run of the season.
Clarke Schmidt surrendered four runs on three hits in four innings while also issuing three walks.
The Yankees will get five days off before the American League Division Series begins on Saturday at Yankee Stadium. The opponent and start time are still to be determined.
