HABs persist in Canandaigua and Owasco lakes, sparking concerns

Harmful algal blooms (HABs) have continued to plague Finger Lakes communities, raising significant concerns about water quality and public health. Canandaigua Lake recently experienced a record 14-day stretch of cyanoHABs, the longest since monitoring began in 2015, according to the Canandaigua Lake Watershed Association. While cooler weather may help reduce bloom activity, past years have seen outbreaks last into October.

Meanwhile, officials in Auburn are exploring costly measures to address HAB threats in Owasco Lake. Amid growing worries about the safety of drinking water for 45,000 residents, the Auburn City Council is considering extending the intake pipe further into Owasco Lake to avoid contamination.

Both Canandaigua and Owasco Lakes have faced increasing HAB activity, with blooms reported across the Finger Lakes region. As local officials look for solutions, both lakes highlight the growing challenge of protecting water sources from these toxic algal blooms.
