In an effort to assist older workers across the state, the New York State Department of Labor (NYSDOL) and the New York State Office for the Aging (NYSOFA) have unveiled a new online resource page aimed at helping older adults overcome employment barriers. Launched in conjunction with National Employ Older Workers Week, observed from September 22–28, and in alignment with Governor Kathy Hochul’s State Master Plan for Aging, this initiative is part of a broader push to create a more inclusive workforce for New Yorkers of all ages.
The newly launched platform offers older adults essential tools, including job search assistance, upskilling opportunities, career coaching, and strategies for navigating age discrimination in the workplace. It also connects users to flexible employment options and supportive services like job training, helping them remain active in or reenter the workforce.
“New York State is leading the way in building a more inclusive and supportive workforce,” said NYSDOL Commissioner Roberta Reardon. “Older workers bring decades of experience, diverse perspectives, and a strong work ethic to the table, and it’s crucial that we eliminate the barriers preventing them from staying active in their careers.”
NYSOFA Director Greg Olsen echoed the sentiment, stating, “Older adults contribute unparalleled intellectual, social, and economic capital that is the backbone of New York’s economy. Strengthening employment resources for older adults highlights New York’s continuous efforts to be an age-friendly and inclusive state.”
Addressing employment challenges for older adults
The launch of the resource page is a direct response to the growing needs of New York’s aging population. Data from NYSOFA’s Comprehensive Community Assessment Survey of Older Adults, conducted earlier this year, shows that 24% of older adults rate employment as a top concern—impacting over one million New Yorkers aged 60 and older. According to the survey, approximately 19% of older adults are working full-time, 11% are employed part-time, and 3% are actively seeking work, while the rest are fully retired.
With these numbers in mind, the new resource page aims to address key issues older workers face, including the need for retraining and the challenges of age discrimination. The initiative is part of the state’s broader effort to ensure that older workers can thrive in today’s evolving job market.
A critical role in today’s workforce
As employers across the state seek reliable, skilled workers in an increasingly competitive labor market, older adults offer invaluable experience and insight. National Employ Older Workers Week shines a spotlight on this demographic, reminding businesses of the important contributions they make to the labor force. The NYSDOL and NYSOFA’s initiative provides critical support to ensure that older workers are not left behind.
This latest effort also aligns with Governor Hochul’s State Master Plan for Aging, a comprehensive strategy to address the economic, health, and social needs of older New Yorkers. The plan focuses on ensuring that older adults have access to resources that promote both economic security and overall well-being.
