In a candid interview on Vox Media’s podcast Today, Explained, Governor Kathy Hochul discussed her support for banning cell phones in schools across New York State. Hochul emphasized the need to help students focus on learning and social interaction without the constant distraction of smartphones.
“The teachers don’t want to be the phone police,” Hochul said. “They want to teach and help students engage with their peers, not their phones.” She highlighted the benefits of a full ban, referencing schools that noticed students communicating more in hallways and during lunch after removing phones from classrooms.
Hochul acknowledged concerns about school shootings, but said law enforcement advised against allowing cell phones during emergencies. Instead, she stressed the importance of focusing on teachers’ directions to ensure safety. The Governor remains committed to finding solutions that balance safety and educational needs.
