The long-abandoned Butler Correctional Facility is set for a new life as a hardwood sawmill, with Westbury Lumber Co. chosen as the preferred developer by the Wayne County Industrial Development Agency (IDA).
The Finger Lakes Times reports that the decision was made Tuesday, following years of interest from Westbury Lumber’s owner, Jason Smith, whose adjacent operations have been running in Butler for two decades.
Westbury Lumber, a wholesaler of hardwood lumber to cabinet, flooring, and molding manufacturers, plans to repurpose much of the 201-acre facility, focusing on expansion and storage. Smith emphasized that the redevelopment will support the company’s growth from its high-end Northeast markets into global markets.
