Yankees rally falls short as Nationals even series (highlights)

The New York Yankees (78-55) fell behind early, committed a season-high four errors, and never led but still made things interesting in the final two innings before falling 4-2 to the Washington Nationals (60-73) on Tuesday night in D.C.

New York loaded the bases with nobody out for Aaron Judge in the eighth, but he grounded into a double play, and the Yankees scored just once. In the ninth, Jazz Chisholm Jr. doubled and scored on Anthony Volpe’s groundout. Then, Austin Wells and Alex Verdugo hit back-to-back singles to bring DJ LeMahieu to the plate as the go-ahead run. He fouled out down the right-field line and Gleyber Torres flew out to end the contest as the Yankees finished 0-for-8 with runners in scoring position.

Gerrit Cole surrendered three runs in five innings, including back-to-back solo home runs in the fourth. Tim Mayza allowed an unearned run after sloppy defense in the sixth.

Box Score

The Yankees look to bounce back and take two of three in the series on Wednesday at 6:45 p.m. Carlos Rodón will take the hill, looking for his 15th win of the season.
