A gas leak at Crosby’s Gas Station in Clifton Springs has triggered a large-scale investigation and cleanup effort by the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC).
On August 15, DEC officials responded to reports of strong gasoline odors near the station at 1 Kendall Street, which led to the discovery of fuel contaminating the sanitary and storm sewers, as well as Sulphur Creek. The leak, linked to a failed tank test, prompted the emptying of gasoline storage tanks and the deployment of environmental response teams.
Residents reported severe gas fumes, with hazmat teams going door-to-door to ensure safety. Cleanup efforts include removing contaminated groundwater and soil, while the DEC continues to monitor the situation to safeguard public health and the environment.
