Francisco Alvarez crushed a walk-off home run to lift the New York Mets (65-60) to a 4-3 victory over the Baltimore Orioles (73-53) in the series opener on Monday night at Citi Field.
With the game tied at three and one out in the ninth, Alvarez crushed a 3-0 pitch from Orioles right-hander Seranthony DomÃnguez into the seats in right-center for a walk-off homer. The home run was his sixth of the season and first since July 26.
The Mets led 3-0 through the first four innings, thanks to a two-run shot from J.D. Martinez and an RBI single from Tyrone Taylor, but Baltimore tied it at three in the seventh on a balk and a solo home run.
David Peterson surrendered all three runs (two earned) over seven innings while walking one and striking out eight. José Buttó and Edwin DÃaz tossed scoreless frames in relief.
The Mets will hand the ball to Jose Quintana on Tuesday as they look to take the first two games of this three-game series. The first pitch is slated for 7:10 p.m.
