Communities in Steuben County are grappling with significant flood damage after Tropical Storm Debby swept through the Southern Tier on Friday, causing widespread destruction in towns like Woodhull, Cameron, Jasper, and Canisteo. The storm, which brought heavy rain and flooded rivers, left homes, roads, and infrastructure badly damaged.
Steuben County Commissioner of Public Works Eric Rose noted that preparations began Thursday in anticipation of trouble areas. “We started mobilizing stuff in the concerned trouble areas before the storm hit, and Woodhull was definitely one of them,” Rose said. The damage, more widespread than a similar 2021 storm, has prompted a coordinated response from local and state agencies.
With a state of emergency declared, cleanup efforts are ongoing, and residents are urged to avoid unnecessary travel in the hardest-hit towns. The Red Cross has opened a shelter at Corning-Painted Post High School for those displaced by the flood.
