This October, the Rochester Folk Art Guild is offering a unique workshop on Navajo weaving, led by acclaimed fourth-generation weaver Marilou Schultz. From October 9 to 12, participants will learn traditional techniques to craft a small rug on an upright loom at the Guild’s location in Middlesex, NY. The workshop includes hands-on instruction in wool preparation and dyeing, and aims to deepen participants’ understanding of Navajo culture.
Marilou Schultz, renowned for her dedication to preserving Navajo weaving traditions, has been awarded the Santa Fe Indian Market Excellence in Weaving Award and the Heard Museum’s Best of Division Award. Her work is celebrated in the Native American community and the broader art world.
The Guild offers early bird and BIPOC student discounts, and encourages all experience levels to join. A free lecture by Schultz is scheduled for October 13 during the Guild’s Open House and Apple Festival, featuring fresh cider, craft studios, and more. Limited spots are available, so interested participants are encouraged to register soon.
