Tompkins County Legislature has approved a feasibility study for a new government center on Block 14 in Ithaca, potentially transforming the area between Seneca, West Martin Luther King Jr., State, South Albany, and South Geneva Streets.
The proposed four-story building would replace the current Human Services Annex and two parking lots, addressing space needs as New York State reclaims courthouse space. Legislature Chair Dan Klein emphasized the importance of determining which departments should be housed in the new center, aiming for a “super green, and energy efficient” project.
The county formed a Local Development Corporation to explore redevelopment possibilities, with construction expected to start in 2026 and completion by 2028. The project includes maintaining parking spaces for employees and complying with Ithaca’s zoning and historic district laws.
