REPORT: Wells College closure was unapproved, per accreditor

Wells College has shut down and lost its accreditation, but its accreditor, the Middle States Commission on Higher Education, criticized the abrupt process.

The Citizen reports the Commission stated that the closure is “unapproved” due to the lack of an approved teach-out plan and failure to provide necessary information.

The commission has been critical since Wells announced its closure on April 29 after 156 years. The college closed on June 30, ending its accreditation that began in 1921.

Wells College is now working with the state attorney general’s office to manage its remaining assets.
