Ithaca Planning Board reviews Cornell’s 800-bed housing proposal

Cornell University presented its plans for an 800-bed expansion to the Maplewood graduate housing complex to the Ithaca Planning Board this week.

The proposal includes six five-story buildings with 615 apartments, primarily studios and one-bedroom units, and a community center with amenities like a café and wellness spaces.

The project also includes 150 parking spaces and green spaces. Cornell hopes to avoid a new Environmental Impact Statement (EIS) by using previous studies from the first phase of Maplewood.

While the board generally supported the project, members raised concerns about trails, impact fees, and the need for a thorough environmental review.
