With accidental gun injuries on the rise, New York officials and gun store owners are urging firearm users to follow safe storage practices, according to Spectrum News. State law requires locked storage if children under 16 are present, and violations can lead to criminal charges.
Craig Serafini of Upstate Guns and Ammo says every legal sale includes a basic lock, but safes offer far stronger protection. Studies show proper storage of both guns and ammunition can prevent up to 85% of unintentional shootings among children.
New York sees up to 90 hospitalizations each year from such accidents. Officials stress that beyond legal compliance, safe storage is about protecting lives at home and in the community.
