Waterloo seeks ideas for $10M Downtown Revitalization Grant: Businesses and residents urged to submit proposals

Waterloo officials are inviting ideas on how to use a $10 million state grant to revitalize the downtown and canalside areas. At the June 10 Village Board meeting, Mayor Walt Bennett encouraged business owners and residents to submit ideas and funding applications for the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI).

The village has formed a local planning committee to guide the process and ensure projects meet guidelines. Some proposed projects include renovating the Main Street Shoppe Centre, converting the old Moore’s Furniture store into an arts center, improving the connection between the canal and downtown, and renovating various commercial and residential structures.

Another potential project is the replacement of the Locust Street Bridge, turning it into a pedestrian-only walkway. The bridge project, previously stalled due to lack of funding, could receive support from the DRI funds.
