New York law enforcement emphasizes seat belt safety for all passengers

As one of the biggest travel weekends of the year approaches, law enforcement across New York state is urging both drivers and passengers to buckle up.

Despite the national seat belt usage rate being 92%, backseat passengers often neglect this life-saving practice.

The Click It or Ticket campaign is reinforcing this message, with increased police presence on the roads until June 2. In 2022, over 11,000 unbelted passengers died in crashes, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Despite a law requiring all passengers to wear seat belts, only 78% of rear-seat occupants comply, highlighting the need for continued education and enforcement.
