Ithaca elementary school repairs will exceed $168K after police chase, crash into building

The Ithaca City School District (ICSD) will incur costs exceeding $168,000 to repair Fall Creek Elementary after a police chase in February ended with a parked car crashing through an exterior wall. Initial estimates were significantly lower at $100,000.

According to new reporting from The Ithaca Voice, local bids were presented to the school board, with the lowest totaling $168,923.

Chief Operations Officer Amanda Verba assured that insurance would cover most costs, with the remaining expenses reimbursed by New York State next year. The incident exposed old asbestos and damaged the school’s HVAC systems, driving up repair costs.

The investigation into the crash, as well as the identity of the driver has not yet been released due to the ongoing nature of the incident.
